C-Section Recovery

A C-section is major abdominal surgery. The standard 6-week clearance addresses incision healing, not the deeper work of restoring scar mobility, abdominal coordination, and pelvic floor function. We rehabilitate the whole system.

C-Section Recovery

Why C-Section Recovery Needs Specialized PT

A cesarean delivery is abdominal surgery — with all the rehabilitation needs that come with it — on top of the demands of pregnancy and new motherhood. The standard 6-week OBGYN follow-up confirms the incision has closed and clears you for "all activities." It does not assess scar mobility, abdominal wall recoordination, pelvic floor function, or readiness to return to lifting, running, or core work.

Many of our C-section patients come in months — or years — after delivery with persistent symptoms they were told were "just how it is now." They aren't. The pelvic floor and abdominal wall can be meaningfully rehabilitated at any postpartum stage.

Common Issues After a C-Section

  • Scar pain, pulling, numbness, or hypersensitivity
  • Scar tissue that feels stuck, ropey, or restricted
  • Lower back, hip, or pelvic pain
  • Pelvic floor symptoms (leaking, urgency, pressure) — yes, C-section patients can still have these
  • Painful intercourse
  • Core weakness that won't respond to traditional ab work
  • Difficulty returning to lifting, running, or exercise without symptoms
  • Bowel changes or pain with bowel movements

How We Treat C-Section Recovery

1. Scar Mobilization

C-section scars often form adhesions that pull on surrounding fascia, contributing to pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, and even bowel changes. We use gentle manual therapy and teach you self-mobilization techniques to restore scar mobility and reduce restriction.

2. Abdominal Wall Recoordination

The C-section involves cutting through multiple layers of abdominal tissue. Those layers don't automatically know how to work together again. We use breath retraining, deep core activation, and progressive loading to restore function from the inside out.

3. Pelvic Floor Assessment & Treatment

Pelvic floor symptoms aren't just for vaginal deliveries. The pelvic floor was loaded throughout pregnancy and may still be compensating. We evaluate and treat as needed, with your full consent on internal work.

4. Return to Exercise

Most patients want to return to lifting, running, yoga, or sport. We build progressive return-to-activity plans that respect tissue healing and rebuild capacity safely.

When to Start

Anytime after your OB has cleared you (typically 6 weeks postpartum), or any time later. We see patients from 6 weeks postpartum through 20+ years out. It is genuinely never too late to address C-section scar restrictions or related symptoms.
