How Ronit Found Pelvic Floor PT

Ronit Sukenick began her career at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia in 2006 after completing a joint BS/Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Boston University. She was set on specializing in neurological rehabilitation — until her own body changed the plan.

At 32 weeks into her first pregnancy, she developed pain in the front of her pelvis so severe she went to the ER thinking she was in labor. The diagnosis: a separated pubic symphysis. The treatment: a prescription for Percocet. At one of the best hospitals in the country, no one could tell her why it happened, whether it would happen again, or how it would get better. Different OBs gave her opposing answers to every question. She knew ninety physical therapists — not one of them treated pregnancy. When she told the delivery nurses she had a pubic symphysis separation, they didn't know what she meant. She could barely walk for the rest of that pregnancy.

Months postpartum, still struggling to move, she finally heard about pelvic floor physical therapy from another mom in a Mommy & Me class — and had to spell out the referral for her own OB-GYN, who had never heard of it. Sitting in that waiting room, she remembers thinking: this is a thing. And if this is a thing, this is what I'm going to do.

Years later — after a second pregnancy with pelvic pain that no local provider could explain, and encounters with "specialists" whose care wasn't grounded in evidence — she was diagnosed with endometriosis, and her years of symptoms finally made sense. Ronit has lived through chronic pelvic pain, a healthcare system with no answers, and treatment that didn't work. It's exactly why Foundations runs the way it does.

"I wish I had seen me. I wish that I had been my own physical therapist."

Building the Field

When Ronit started taking pelvic health coursework, Columbia had no pelvic floor program — and no place for her to use the training. So she helped create one. A urology group down the hall inundated her with referrals almost immediately. There was a huge need for this type of rehabilitation. Within two years she had completed every major course in the specialty, trying to learn as much as possible so she could treat some of the most medically complex pelvic health patients in New York. In 2012, that work became the Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia.

In 2016 she opened a private practice in Westchester on the side — and it grew quickly, with waitlists of patients she couldn't fit in. That practice has since grown into Foundations: a multi-practitioner specialty clinic where she trains and mentors every therapist on staff.

Media & Features

Ronit's perspective on postpartum recovery was featured in The New York Times' "A Survival Guide for the Fourth Trimester", and she appeared as a guest on The V Hive podcast (Episode 63) discussing pelvic girdle pain.

What Patients Say

What Drives Her Practice

Someone once told Ronit that pelvic floor physical therapy can be an art or a science. Her answer: in this practice, it's a science. If a treatment doesn't have evidence behind it, Foundations doesn't do it — and if the evidence changes, the treatment changes. You will never be told your pelvis is "out of alignment" or sold a single magic root cause. You'll get objective measures, honest answers, and a plan grounded in what actually works.

That extends to how she thinks about pain itself. As someone who lived with chronic pelvic pain for a decade, Ronit teaches pain neuroscience from firsthand experience — how chronic pain changes the brain and nervous system, and how to treat that component instead of playing whack-a-mole with symptoms.

She believes deeply in the model Foundations is built on: full 60-minute one-on-one sessions, comprehensive whole-body evaluation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the time to actually understand what's driving each patient's symptoms. And when a patient needs more than PT, she doesn't shrug — she maintains a vetted referral network of urogynecologists, pelvic pain physicians, and colorectal specialists, and helps patients navigate a healthcare system that is genuinely hard to navigate alone.

What Her Team Says

"Ronit has more integrity in her pinky finger than any other person I have ever met. If you're ever unsure a patient is getting the best care, it's: okay, we're doing a deep dive in the literature, we're going to make sure we've asked the right questions. She's really invested in making sure everybody gets the highest quality of care — and it's not just talk with her."
