Foundations PT vs. Standard Insurance PT
Why people pay out-of-pocket for our care when insurance-based clinics exist on every corner. The differences aren't subtle.
| What You Get | Standard Insurance PT | Foundations PT |
|---|---|---|
| Time with your therapist | 15 minutes | 60 minutes, dedicated |
| Rest of the hour | 45 minutes with an aide or alone on equipment | One-on-one entire visit |
| Patients seen at once | 3-5 simultaneously | One — just you |
| Provider qualifications | General physical therapist | Doctors of Physical Therapy with advanced pelvic floor training; PRPC and PCES certifications on staff |
| Treatment approach | Generic exercises, electrical stim, ultrasound | Individualized hands-on manual therapy, biofeedback, evidence-based exercise prescription |
| Visit limits | Capped by insurance (often 6-20 visits/year) | Determined by your progress and goals, not your insurance |
| What you can be treated for | Limited to billable diagnosis codes | Whatever is actually going on with your body |
| Pelvic floor assessment | Often not available, or referred out | Comprehensive, with internal assessment when appropriate (and only with your consent) |
| Biofeedback | Rarely available | Used routinely when appropriate — real-time, objective muscle feedback |
| Progress tracking | Mostly subjective ("how does it feel?") | Objective, data-driven measures — down to pad-weight testing to quantify leakage improvement |
| Out-of-pocket cost | Copay only ($20-50/visit) | Full session fee, often partially reimbursed by out-of-network benefits |
| Reimbursement help | Not needed (insurance pays) | We verify your benefits and submit out-of-network claims for you |
| Wait to be seen | 2-6 weeks typically | Most patients seen within a week |
| Continuity of care | You may be passed between therapists or aides | Same therapist every visit |
| Notes & communication | Sparse, insurance-driven documentation | Detailed clinical notes; we communicate with your other providers |
The Honest Reality
For some conditions and some patients, insurance-based PT is perfectly adequate. A simple ankle sprain, a routine post-op knee, a straightforward back tweak — the standard model can handle these. Many local clinics do this work well.
Where the standard model breaks down is everything else: complex pelvic floor dysfunction, painful intercourse, prolapse, men's pelvic pain, postpartum recovery, chronic pelvic pain, and the orthopedic conditions that don't respond to a 15-minute visit and a generic exercise list. That's where Foundations exists.
If you're not sure which fits your situation, we'll tell you honestly. Sometimes the best advice is "go see your local insurance PT first — if that doesn't help, come see us." We'd rather you get the right care than capture you as a patient.
